El Santuario de Chimayo, in the town of Chimayo

Inside El Santuario de Chimayo. Many pilgrims come to this church every year during Holy Week. Some walk along the highways from as far away as Albuquerque, 80 miles to the south.

In an anteroom, worshippers collect from a hole in the ground (seen here just through the doorway) a little of the tierra bendita (sacred earth) that many believe has healing powers.

Near the church, this restaurant offers "Chimayo Holy Chile".
